The short version
Three things decide trailer counts:
- Footprint — a box that matches a 48 × 40 pallet uses trailer floor space well.
- Flat or set up — knocked-down boxes fit many times more per trailer than set-up boxes.
- Weight — light boxes fill a trailer by volume before weight; dense loads hit the weight limit first.
Estimate a load
The calculator below gives a rough estimate using stated assumptions. A partner supplier confirms the real count with your quote.
Inputs

600 × 48×40×36 3-wall, flat
Boxes per 53′ trailer1,820

Displaced volume per box40 ft³
Flat vs set up20.2× more boxes per trailerShipping knocked down moves 1,820 per load against 90 set up.
Heads up: folded flat, this box overhangs a 48 × 40 pallet. It will still ship — it just needs a larger base or a floor-loaded plan. Mention it in your quote request.
Estimates only. Assumes a 53′ dry van with 630 × 98 × 108 in usable interior and a 44,000 lb payload, boxes stacked to 84 in on a 48 × 40 pallet. Real loads move with board caliper, banding and dock rules, so a partner supplier confirms the real count with your quote.
Pallet tips
- Avoid overhang. A box that hangs over the pallet edge loses strength at the overhanging corners.
- Use a pad or tier sheet on pallets with wide deck gaps.
- Ask about pallets with your order; see pallets.
