Used usually works when…
- The box stays inside your operation.
- Appearance does not matter.
- The load is within the box's rating with a safety margin.
- You can accept some variation between boxes.
New is usually better when…
- A customer or carrier requires a current certification.
- The box is printed, branded or customer-facing.
- Food-contact rules apply.
- Every box has to be identical, or the size is unusual.
On the environmental side
Reusing a sound box avoids making a new one, and the box can still be recycled at the end of its life. That is a real benefit, but it depends on the box being fit for the job: a used box that fails and damages a load is no saving.
