Collection

Used corrugated (OCC, old corrugated containers) is collected loose or baled.

Baling

Corrugated is compressed into bales so it can be moved efficiently.

Pulping

At the mill, bales are mixed with water in a pulper and broken down into fiber.

Cleaning

Screens and cleaners remove tape, staples, plastic and other contaminants.

Papermaking

The fiber is formed into new linerboard and medium, which become new corrugated board.

What helps

  • Dry, clean corrugated kept separate from other waste.
  • Removing film, foam and liners.
  • Asking before sending waxed or coated board.

Fiber gets shorter each time it is recycled, so it can't be recycled forever. Reusing a sound box first, then recycling it, gets more use from the same fiber.
